Beatrice

“Something in me knows of a life I was meant to live but for whatever reason, I have not . . . ”
Words that ring painfully true for Adam Sheppard, a San Francisco programmer who has spent the
vast majority of his 30-something years lost in the dim glow of a computer screen. On the verge of a
psychotic break, Adam begins to have a recurring dream of his early childhood and the hauntingly rustic
town of Mendocino California where he grew up. Convinced he has left something behind there,
something vital to his present sanity, Adam walks away from his current life to figure out what that is.
One night on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, lost in thoughts of suicide, Adam has a chance
encounter with a mysterious woman. Later he realizes that she is Beatrice, a long forgotten childhood
friend whose fiery spirit and red hair had filled his young heart with immeasurable wonder. The
coincidence of their reunion only deepens as Adam discovers that Beatrice has returned to Mendocino
also due to a recurring dream, eerily similar to his own.
Are they lost soul mates drawn together through time and space? As Adam begins to hope that his
life could be more than a bleak virtual wasteland, he finds himself a pawn in a game that pits dark forces
against those few quixotic souls who still search for meaning, beauty, and magic in the world.

Despite their age difference, the two become cautious friends, but Charlotte's quiet disposition and keen mind intrigue Walter. She is so different from Mina, yet perhaps, for Walter, it may be that his perfect match is a woman who calms him and helps him keep his feet on the ground. Though wary of risking his heart a second time, he finds himself falling deeply in love with her.

In the end, he is able to forgive Mina, forget his heartbreak, and forge ahead in a new relationship, realizing that there is a vast difference between a man's "first love" and his "true love."

A Drop Of Night by Stefan Bachmann

REVIEW

A Drop of Night

In A DROP OF NIGHT, Stefan Bachmann’s latest work, readers are introduced to a young girl named Anouak. Anouk, along with four other gifted teens, has received the opportunity to fly to France and help investigate a newly found underground palace that will be huge news for the history community. Anouk doesn’t bond well with other people, but she’s more than happy to get out of the house and away from her family. Will, Jules, Lilly and Hayden, the other teens from that have been chosen, are not only from wildly different countries, but all have extremely contrasting personalities from one another, forcing the group to work past their differences or simply ignore one another. The head of the expedition, Professor Dorf, seems to have everything under control, but Anouk senses something off about him.
While Anouk’s story is being told, the book alternates between this and another story dating back to over two centuries prior. It follows AurĂ©lie, the daughter of a noble frenchman, as the underground palace is being built beneath her home. The two plotlines eventually develop and collide in a chilling way the reader would never expect — each is a mystery not only for the reader, but for the characters as well.
“A DROP OF NIGHT is a captivating horror, adventure and mystery novel with an intricately spun story and interesting, unique characters.”
When the expedition takes a dangerous turn, Anouk and the other four are left on their own, not knowing who they can trust and who they should run from. The palace holds many secrets, so the group is not sure exactly who they’re hiding from, but it is clear that something is out to get them, and it won’t stop until they’re dead. But if that’s the case, then why were they selected specifically to be brought here if only to be killed? They eventually let their guards down in order to work together as the situation becomes life threatening, creating a nice bit of character development.
A DROP OF NIGHT is a captivating horror, adventure and mystery novel with an intricately spun story and interesting, unique characters. The mystery develops with every page and the haunting aura only adds to the suspense. As the story unfolds, so do the characters. This novel is filled with vivid descriptions and completely unexpected events, making it one of the most exciting books I’ve read in a long time. The concept is entirely unique and new, and the plot is extremely well developed, making the novel an exhilarating thriller. The way it transfers between the two timelines makes it even more intriguing, as it leaves you in wait for the development of the other storyline each time it switches. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a well written, exciting read.

Title & Author: Into The Dim by Janet B. Taylor
Genre: Young Adult – Science Fiction, Time Travel
Release Date: March 1, 2016
Series: Into The Dim #1
Publisher: HMH Books For Young Readers
How I Got the Book: bought
Description:
“When fragile, sixteen-year-old Hope Walton loses her mom to an earthquake overseas, her secluded world crumbles. Agreeing to spend the summer in Scotland, Hope discovers that her mother was more than a brilliant academic, but also a member of a secret society of time travelers. Trapped in the twelfth century in the age of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Hope has seventy-two hours to rescue her mother and get back to their own time. Along the way, her path collides with that of a mysterious boy who could be vital to her mission . . . or the key to Hope’s undoing.”

Time Travel Adventure

Into the Dim is another time travel book out this year. The setting of this story is probably one of my favorites – the Middle Ages during the reign of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
I’m getting ahead of myself – the story starts with Hope traveling to Scotland (which is unfortunately not a main setting of the book) to spend the summer with her family while she continues to mourn the disappearance of her mother. There she uncovers secrets about her mother’s past that lay long uncovered…
So yeah, I think you can guess one big secret: Hope’s family can time travel. Many readers have a real problem with the mechanics of how time travel is described in stories, but for me I let the scientific explanations just wash over me (I feel it’s better to suspend my disbelief). Into the Dim explains it with Tesla’s rods or something…yeah, I’m not sure, sorry.
My issues with the story didn’t lie with the science, they were with the characters and the plot.
Hope felt very bland to me – she felt like a paper YA heroine: shy but strong, awkward but cute. The endearing qualities she had rubbed off fairly quickly.
Not to mention a sort of love triangle (unless I misread the sitch). I can’t here. The great setting of history was overshadowed in some places by boy swooning and angst and feelings. It was too much for this story.
And then sadly, the story and writing were very straightforward and linear. I love concise, clean writing, but Into the Dim came across as bare bones with little distinctness. The twists in the story were even pretty sad – I saw them 10 miles away.
The strength of the book was in the historic detail, but for me it wasn’t enough to make it a stand out novel.

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.
Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there’s nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can’t wait to escape from.
Destined to wind up “wed or dead,” Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she’d gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan’s army, with a fugitive who’s wanted for treason. And she’d never have predicted she’d fall in love with him…or that he’d help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

Stay on the roads. Don’t enter the woods. Never go out at night.
Those are the rules in Rowan’s Glen, a remote farming community in the Missouri Ozarks where Ivy Templeton’s family has lived for centuries. It’s an old-fashioned way of life, full of superstition and traditions, and sixteen-year-old Ivy loves it. The other kids at school may think the Glen kids are weird, but Ivy doesn’t care—she has her cousin Heather as her best friend. The two girls share everything with each other—or so Ivy thinks. When Heather goes missing after a May Day celebration, Ivy discovers that both her best friend and her beloved hometown are as full of secrets as the woods that surround them.

REVIEW: The atmosphere and world-building is spot on and makes the perfect backdrop for such a dark, twisted tale. Jude’s descriptions are vivid and imaginative and her writing is nearly flawless. The characters are well-constructed, and while not always likeable, they are real and relatable.
If you’re looking for a thrilling Southern Gothic tale filled with mystery, atmosphere, and beautifully written characters, look no further! Sarah Jude is a master of her craft. You won’t be able to put this one down. Fresh edgy, and diverse YA that doesn’t shy away from delving into the dark and twisted, The May Queen Murders is a must read for 2016. Loved it!

Synopsis
“I’ve been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she works. I don’t know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she’s scared. But I will.”
One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn’t show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia’s life.
When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia’s mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family’s world to shatter.
An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems.
My Review
I saw this book at Barnes&Noble and the cover intrigued me so I decided to buy it and give it a shot. And it was a good decision too.
I will admit that I was a little unsure about the book in the beginning. I couldn’t remember who the characters were at first (not sure why) and I really wanted to hear from Mia. However, the more I read, the more I got hooked. I really didn’t like Mia’s dad at all and didn’t like Mia’s mom at first. As the story goes on, you find out more about her and things fall into place about why she acts how she does. She’s definitely more sympathetic than I originally realized and she really grew on me.
When Mia is kidnapped, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. But as I kept reading, I had an idea of what was going to happen. And I’ll be honest. I kind of liked Colin, in a weird way. There was something about him that was a bit sad, though kidnapping someone certainly doesn’t make him a great guy. Regardless, I liked him. And I also really liked Mia throughout the whole book. She was obviously one of the main characters, but we never heard from her until the very end of the book.
The characters are definitely what kept me the most interested in this story. The plot line was great, but I was so intrigued by each character and why they were doing certain things that I couldn’t stop reading. And there is a serious twist at the end! I remember reading the end, finishing it, and then just thinking, “Oh damn, what did I just read?!” I still have that feeling when I think about this book! It was seriously great and one of my favorites that I’ve read not only this year but ever! I can’t wait to read more by Kubica!
